Manually Installing the Zotero Word for Windows Plugin

To install the plugin by hand,

  1. install the plugin Firefox extension (you can skip this step when using Standalone).
  2. Find and open your Firefox profile (if using Zotero Standalone, the default filepath will be almost identical, but have “Zotero” instead of “Firefox”)
  3. In your Firefox/Zotero profile open the folder extensions/zoteroWinWordIntegration@zotero.org/install, where you you can find a copy of the file Zotero.dotm (use with Word for Windows 2010 and higher) or Zotero.dot (use with older versions of Word).
  4. Find your Word startup folder using the instructions below. You should now have two folders open: The Word startup folder and the “install” folder containing Zotero.dot
  5. Copy the Zotero.dot file to your Word Startup folder. (Be sure to copy the file rather than moving it.)
  6. Start (or restart) Microsoft Word to begin using the plugin.

Manually Installing the Zotero Word for Mac 2016 Plugin

When troubleshooting the add-on after having installed it, we recommend starting with step 4.

To install the plugin by hand,

  1. install the plugin Firefox extension (you can skip this step when using Standalone).
  2. Find and open your Firefox profile (if using Zotero Standalone, the default filepath will be almost identical, but have “Zotero” instead of “Firefox”)
  3. In your Firefox/Zotero profile, open the folder extensions/zoteroMacWordIntegration@zotero.org/install, where you you can find a copy of the file Zotero.dot.
  4. Find your Word startup folder and make sure Word specifies a startup folder using the instructions below. If you set the startup folder to a location already containing Zotero.dot, restart Word and you will see the Zotero add-on. Otherwise, you should now have two folders open: The Word startup folder and the “install” folder containing Zotero.dot
  5. Copy the Zotero.dot file to your Word Startup folder. (Be sure to copy the file rather than moving it.)
  6. Start (or restart) Microsoft Word to begin using the plugin.

Locating your Word Startup folder

The correct folder can be found in the Options window of Word:

Word 2003 and earlier

Open the Tools menu and click Options. Under the 'File Locations' tab you will find the Startup directory.

Word 2007 or later

Click the Microsoft Office Button in the top-left corner (in Word 2010 the “File” tab replaces the Microsoft Office Button), and then click Word Options. Click Advanced. Under General, click File Locations. The Startup folder should be listed there. Select it and click modify. Placing the cursor in the location bar at the top of the window will allow you to copy the complete path to the Startup folder. Click Cancel to close the dialog.

MacWord 2016

In many cases, no Start-up folder will be set at all. These instructions direct you to set the startup folder to a standard location. You may already find the Zotero.dot file in it.

Click on “Word” in bold next to Apple in the Mac applications menu and select “Preferences” in the drop-down options. Click on “File locations” under “Personal settings” and click on “Start up” at the bottom of the list. This will list your startup folder location.

If there is no location, click “modify'” and select a path along the lines of ~/Library/Group Containers/UBF8T346G9.Office/User Content/Startup/Word, where UBF8T346G9 is a random string that will be different on your computer. If you can't find the Library folder, it may be hidden. You can show hidden folders in Finder using the option key. You can then press Cmd-Shift-G in any file dialog to get a place to type the path or you can drag a folder from the Finder (which you accessed with the Option key) into the file dialog to select that folder.
