This page provides installation instructions for the various Zotero word processor plugins. Note that Zotero 1.0.x and Zotero 2.0 require different versions of these plugins. If you are not sure which version of Zotero and word processor plugin is suitable for you, check the word processor compatibility chart.

Warnings:

• Use of Zotero 2.0 with your Word and OpenOffice documents will irrevocably upgrade them, and you will no longer be able to use them with Zotero 1.0.x releases.
• Documents used with the Zotero 1.0 plugins must be upgraded to work with Zotero 2.0 on the same computer on which they were previously used. If you upgrade them on a different, synced computer, you may end up with mismatched citations.

The word processor plugins are distributed as Firefox extensions, which provide integration support to Zotero and install the necessary components into the word processors. After you have installed a plugin from this page, Firefox will prompt you to install later versions automatically the same way that it does for Zotero. You can also manually upgrade to the latest version from within Firefox by going to Tools→Add-ons→Extensions and clicking Find Updates.

The latest version of the Word for Windows plugin for Zotero 2.0 is 3.0a3. The plugin is compatible with Word 2000 or newer and Windows 2000 or newer.

Close Word before installing the plugin.

If you've installed the Word plugin into Firefox but don't see the Zotero toolbar in Word, close Word and then, in Firefox, go to Tools→Add-ons→Extensions→Zotero WinWord Integration→Preferences and click “Reinstall Word components”. Then start Word and check for the toolbar.

The latest version of the Mac Word plugin for Zotero 2.0 is 3.0a8. The plugin is compatible with Word 2004 and 2008 and OS X Tiger or newer (including Snow Leopard):

1. Install PythonExt:
   • Firefox 3.5 and 3.6 users should install PythonExt from zotero.org (Firefox extension, 11MB). This custom build of PythonExt fixes several issues with the official releases, including the alpha release for Firefox 3.6. For instructions on how to update PythonExt, see the troubleshooting page.
   • Firefox 3.0 users should install PythonExt from the official site.
2. Install the Word for Mac Plugin (Firefox extension, 126KB).

Word 2008 users: The Word 2008 plugin uses the Word script menu rather than a toolbar.

The latest version of the OpenOffice plugin for Zotero 2.0 is 3.0a6.

• Install the OpenOffice Plugin (Firefox extension, 1.1MB)

Be sure to restart OpenOffice after installing the plugin.

If you've installed the OpenOffice plugin into Firefox but don't see the Zotero toolbar in OpenOffice, close OpenOffice and then, in Firefox, go to Tools→Add-ons→Extensions→Zotero OpenOffice Integration→Preferences and click “Reinstall OpenOffice components”. Then start OpenOffice and check for the toolbar.

The latest version of the Windows Word plugin for Zotero 1.0.x is 1.0b3. The plugin is compatible with Word 2000 or newer and Windows 2000 or newer, and can be installed either via an installer or manually.

The latest version of the Mac Word plugin for Zotero 1.0.x is 1.0b3. The plugin is compatible with Word X and 2004. To install the plugin, download and run the plugin template file installer:

Note: The Mac Word plugin for Zotero 1.0.x is not compatible with Word 2008 for Mac. Users of Word 2008 can use Zotero 2.0 in combination with an alpha version of the Zotero 2.0–compatible Word 2008 plugin.

The latest version of the OpenOffice plugin for Zotero 1.0.x is 1.0b4. The latest version of the plugins for NeoOffice 2.x and OpenOffice X11 for Mac is 1.0b3.

(compatible with NeoOffice 2.x; NeoOffice 3.0 is only supported by Zotero 2.0 with the Zotero 2.0 OpenOffice plugin)

Download OpenOffice.org X11 for Mac OS X extension (48KB)

If you need to upgrade your OpenOffice or NeoOffice plugin, make sure to follow these instructions. Otherwise the plugin may fail to install or you may receive communication errors when attempting to insert a citation.

1. Remove the previous version of Zotero.oxt from Tools→Extension Manager…→My Extensions.
2. Restart OpenOffice/NeoOffice.
3. Install the new version of the plugin by either double-clicking on the .oxt file from the file system or clicking “Add…” in the Extension Manager and locating the .oxt file.
4. Restart OpenOffice/NeoOffice again.

After following these steps, the Zotero citation toolbar should appear in the toolbar.
