Jo McCallum
I’m Jo, digital basketmaker and PhD student.
I trained as an architect and recently finished a City and Guilds Level 3 Certificate in Creative Techniques in Textiles (Basketry), the last vocational course of its kind in the UK. As an architecture student I gravitated towards weaving structures and material science, but it wasn’t until I completed my honours dissertation – The Fabricated Frame | Women, Textiles and Architecture – that I really understood how weaving could inform architecture. Right now, I’m doing a PhD and reacquainting myself with Rhino and Grasshopper, with a view to exploring the relationship between Japanese bamboo basketry and digital design. I’m also working on a range of hybrid craft prototypes that may be of interest to artists, architects and trans-disciplinary thinkers.
