Yes, you can [[sorting_screencast|sort]] your Zotero library and individual collections within it alphabetically, numerically, and chronologically (in ascending or descending order) according to different criteria. For example, you can sort alphabetically by "Title" or "Creator" by clicking on one or the other field at the top of the center column in your Zotero pane. You can sort numerically by the number of attachments (files, snapshots, links, and notes) associated with reference items: click on the small plus icon to the right of "Creator" and results will display in ascending order (from least to most); click again and they'll display in descending order (most to least). The list of sorting criteria can also be expanded by clicking the spreadsheet icon above the vertical scrollbar and choosing from a menu of fields, including "Date," "Type," "Year," and "Publisher." Your selections will be added to the top of the center pane alongside the other column headings. You can re-order columns by dragging a column heading to the left or right of its original position. | Yes, you can sort the Zotero library view by most item fields, including Creator, Title, Year, Publication, Extra, Volume, Call Number, Date Modified, etc.), as well as by whether it has notes and/or attachments. To make more field columns visible, click the Add Columns button at the top-right of the Zotero center pane (or top pane in Stacked view). To sort on a column, click the column title at the top of the Zotero library pane. Click again to sort in the reverse direction. You can reorganize columns by dragging their titles to the left or right. |
| |
Also note that Zotero sorts by Creator, Date, and Date Modified after the main sort column. For example, if you were to specify "Title" as the primary sorting criterion, and your library contained three or more references with the same title, then Zotero would secondarily sort those items by creator. | You can change the secondary sort field for each primary sort field (e.g., when sorting by Creator, sort items by the same author by Year) by click on the Add Columns button at the top-right of the Zotero center pane (or top pane in Stacked view). |
| |
| //Note:// When sorting on the Date field, Zotero will sort on the the parsed recognizable date parts (e.g., day, month, year), not the free-form text entered into the field. Hover the cursor over the item's Date field to view the parsed date. |

A word about how Date and Year work. While Zotero accepts a free-form date in the Date field for each bibliographic record ("Summer 2006", "Jan 21, 2007", etc.), the entered value is parsed into recognizable parts ("2006-00-00", "2007-01-21", etc.), and these parts are used to sort the field in the middle pane. The Year column also uses the Date field, but only the year portion of it. | |
