Patrick Thaddeus Jackson

Associate Professor of International Relations; Director of General Education

My work is concerned with the production of knowledge: philosophically, sociologically, and practically. I'm specifically interested in the production of knowledge about Others over a boundary separating them from Selves, and about the production of knowledge of Selves by locating them among Others (or, alternately, by imagining that no genuine Others exist, which i think is a basic temptation of liberal individualism). I explore these issues in research on civilizations in world politics, on the sociology of International Relations as a field and a discipline, and on the role of popular culture (specifically, science fiction) in political life; I also explore these issues more conceptually in my work on the philosophy of science, and more practically as an educator of undergraduate students and the head administrator of a living-learning program for first year college students.
