Author: Warner, D.G. Title: A new classification for reference statistics Summary: The director of a health sciences library, Warner conducted a literature review on how other health sciences libraries conducted reference services – and recorded them (Warner 52). Warner and fellow personnel created a model in which reference queries were categorized based upon complexity of query: nonresource-based, skill-based, strategy-based, and consultation. After a successful pilot project, IRS personnel continued with the query classification scheme. Though now a decade old, Warner’s model is helpful for contemporary library personnel struggling to define reference duties, and subsequently, how to record them.
