Special Collections, University of Delaware Library, Newark, Delaware

Library Analyst (April 2008 – present)

  • Process manuscript collections (primary responsibility for Delawareana, graphic, and historical collections) • Arrange, organize, and describe collections according to archival principles and standards (DACS, EAD) • Undertake basic preservation work as needed, including document humidifying and flattening, Mylar encapsulation using ultrasonic welder, and measuring and ordering custom enclosures • Use OPAC, OCLC, Getty Art & Architecture Thesaurus, LCSH, TGM, and other print and electronic bibliographic and reference tools to assign subject tracings and research collections.

  • Produce EAD finding aids using XMetal Author, Notepad, and Microsoft Excel • Modify and revise existing XSLT and XSL-FO stylesheets for HTML and PDF delivery of EAD-XML finding aids • Independently developed and maintain test instance of the eXtensible Text Framework (XTF) for use in indexing, searching, retrieving, and displaying finding aids and digital objects of many formats (XML, MS Word, PDF).

  • Designed and implemented repository collection management/location database (Microsoft Access) to improve paging of archival collections • Coordinate manuscript collections’ maintenance, including collection shifts in manuscript stacks in multiple locations • Supervise and train student assistants to support manuscript processing including primary responsibility for manuscripts’ barcoding project.

  • Created and maintained department webpages (including online exhibitions, subject guides, and legacy finding aids) using HTML/XHTML, CSS, JavaScript, Adobe Photoshop, and other languages/software products as needed • Implement University “branding” initiatives for Special Collections’ web presence • Participated on 18-month Library-wide taskforce investigating adoption of the Drupal content management system • Streamlined department web pages by writing stylesheets and utilizing server side includes for frequently repeated elements • Added social media toolbar (AddThis) to department web pages and monitor patron web visits and sharing behaviors.

  • Participated in 12-month NHPRC-funded repurposing metadata grant project to fully digitize the George S. Messersmith papers • Helped define institutional best practices for linking digital assets (held in DSpace) to EAD finding aids.

  • Provide technical support for departmental computing needs and oversee digital image and file management practices.

  • Fulfill department-wide public service duties including reader services, reference assistance, and weekly reception desk assignment • Support manuscript coordinator with on-site and remote reference • Assist with reference- and exhibit-related digitization projects using Nikon D-50 camera, flatbed scanner, graphic design software, and large-format printers • Aid exhibition production and installation (2 large gallery exhibitions and numerous smaller exhibitions annually).

Teaching Assistant (December 2007 – April 2008) 

  • Served as teaching assistant for University-administered, grant-funded Department of Defense Area Studies courses for federal agency employees and active-duty military personnel.

  • Assisted seminar instructors with all aspects of their travel and teaching needs, including providing transportation to/from airport, hotel, dining and classroom facilities • Ensured instructor receipts were returned to the University for reimbursement purposes.

  • Functioned as front-line support for instructors brought in from across the globe based on their areas of expertise • Liaised between instructors, facility personnel, and Department of Defense representatives in Maryland and the Delaware program director based at the University’s main campus 2-hours from the course facility.
