Kevin Sedeño-Guillén is a professor in the Linguistics and Literature Program at the University of Cartagena and co-editor of the academic journal Cuadernos de Literatura de Hispanoamérica y el Caribe. He completed his M.A. and Ph.D. in Hispanic Studies at the University of Kentucky. He specializes in Latin American and Caribbean colonial studies with a focus on 18th and 19th century cultural productions, particularly in relation to the interceptions between print culture, periodical press and manuscript circulation.
His articles on Cuban, Latin American and Spanish literary and cultural topics have appeared in Caribe: Revista de Cultura y Literatura, Colonial Latin American Review, Cuadernos de Ilustración y Romanticismo, Cuadernos de Literatura del Caribe e Hispanoamérica, Dieciocho: Hispanic Enlightenment, New Perspectives on the Eighteenth Century, Revista de Crítica Literaria Latinoamericana, Revista de Estudios Hispánicos, Revista de Estudios Sociales, and Visitas al Patio.
His first book, Modernidades contra-natura: crítica ilustrada, prensa periódica y cultura manuscrita en el siglo XVIII americano (De Gruyter, 2024) examines the emergence and development of an enlightened critique of reality as a counterpoint to the negative representations of America and Americans elaborated from natural history, to demonstrate a tense discussion on the mental parity of Americans and to evidence the capacity of intellectuals from the Americas to produce and circulate knowledge in manuscript form. He also co-edited the book La narrativa de Mayra Montero: hacia una literatura transnacional caribeña (2008). His next book project approaches the development of enlightened criticism in the Greater Caribbean through the study of a corpus of printed or manuscript texts that circulated in Caribbean colonial enclaves controlled by conflicting imperial powers during the long eighteenth century.
