Steve Ryder

Steven (Steve) Ryder is a Special Lecturer at the University of Waterloo in the Department of Communication Arts. He holds a PhD in Communication from the University of South Florida, Tampa. His dissertation weaves lived experience among close friends to understand HIV disclosure conversations through the lens of relational communication, narrative inquiry, and autoethnography. He has a background in theatre and information technology, and draws from this unusual blend of skills to engage storytelling in performative and digitally pervasive modalities. Stories from the margins, from underrepresented, and from often contested standpoints are of particular interest. He is author of several single and co-authored journal articles and hopes, soon, to publish his dissertation research in book form in addition to exploring film, stage, and digital media adaptations. In his spare time, Steve enjoys communing with nature and playing video games. He is well-traveled, an avid cyclist, and certified scuba diver.
