People often enjoy reading about characters to whom they can relate. The books listed below each feature a character with a hearing impairment. If you teach students who are deaf or have other hearing impairments, consider adding some of these young adult books to your classroom library for help me with my essay and their homework.

"Hurt Go Happy" is a realistic fiction about 13-year-old Joey Willis. Deaf since she was 6 years old, Joey's mother didn't let her learn sign language so she struggles to read lips. When Joey meets Dr. Charles Mansell and his baby chimpanzee, Sukari, things start to change. Secretly learning from Dr. Mansell and her furry friend, Joey begins to sign and is happier than she's ever been, but there may be trouble for Sukari.
