Research

Masters Thesis May 2008 – May 2009, Advisor: Ted Kinnaman

“Hume’s Internalist-Externalism: A Causal Epistemology Approach”

Hume’s epistemology has too often been interpreted as a sort of global skepticism. In this project I argue that this interpretation is incorrect. Hume constructs a bi-level epistemological account with an internalist rationality constraint and an externalist account of warrant that is derivative of the pre-established harmony between “custom or habit” as it operates in human minds and causation in the objects themselves.

Undergraduate Senior Thesis August 2004 – May 2005, Advisor: Lou Hammann

“A Wittgensteinian Look at the Confusion of Faith in Public Discourse: When Language-Games Overlap”

The term “faith” is ambiguous between its theological and secular uses. In this project I loosely apply Wittgenstein’s concept of language-games to clarify some points where the two uses become confused in often dangerous ways in public – especially political – discourses.
