I am the Associate Director of the Institute for Multimedia Literacy, at USC's School of Cinematic Arts. I teach undergraduate and graduate clases in the history and theory of new media, all of which are theory/practice (e.g. contain a hands-on component). Since emergent technologies allow humans to 'write' with the multiple registers of text, image, video, sound and interactivity, it can be confining to use only one (words). Moreover, it might be considered incomplete scholarship.
