enter curly quotes in the title field

On manual entry, Zotero creates straight quotes in fields. As a result, manually entered citations appear in bibliography incorrectly, as follows:

Hartman, Andrew. “'The Red Template': US Policy in Soviet-Occupied Afghanistan.” Third World Quarterly 23, no. 3 (June 2002): 467-489.

It is possible to cut a curly quote from Word and paste it in the title field, but that's a pain to do every time you need to enter a quotation mark.

Converting straight quotes to curly ones on CSL export would work just as well as changing the settings for the title field--whatever is easier.

This seems like a minor issue, but it's important for teaching--I have students writing research papers with Zotero, and it's pretty confusing for them when the software doesn't follow the citation rules I teach them.

Simon, Sean: Thoughts? We could do this in the data layer, which would guarantee curly quotes in all output (e.g. reports), but I'm not sure it's really Zotero's job, and users probably won't expect it. Fixing it at CSL export time would at least be appropriate in the name of producing correct bibliographic output.

If we did this in the data layer, we might need to hidden pref it (defaulting to on) for the crazies who object to real quotes.

I would go for fixing it at CSL export time. I don't think we really want to change the form of the quotes when exporting to other formats.

Is this done automatically by citeproc-js in Zotero 2.1? Thought so-- but not sure. If so, we can close this one.

Happy to confirm that citeproc-js handles this. If straight quotes are used, quotes in output will be those appropriate to the locale context (regardless of whether doubles or singles are used in the Zotero field). If curly quotes are used in the field with the CSL English locale (or whatever the CSL locale specifies, for other locales), quotes in output will be set double or single as appropriate to the nesting level, just as for straight quotes. If non-straight quotes not defined in the CSL locale are used, they will be passed through verbatim.
