Only happens on Windows and only in OpenOffice.

Can you use something like a Unicode zero-width space?

Ugh. This is a consequence of using the null character after citations to prevent additional text from becoming part of the citation, which apparently gets displayed only under Windows. I'll try some other characters and if none of them display nothing, I'll just disable this.
