Frank: Are these still applicable? Should 'judge' replace 'author' on the case type as the primary creator, or should 'author' remain?

I've posted a query on the (still small) zotero-legal group to see if anyone has a strong feeling about this one. Several people in the forum discussion linked in the ticket seemed to think it was very important, but after thinking it over I'm not so sure. I'll nudge the forum thread as well, and we'll see what people say over the next couple of days. If no one has strong feelings, I'm happy to make the call myself, so you'll have an answer.

CSL will probably not be using the creator data for cases, at least in the near term, but just to confirm: Is it right to assume that this would just be a mapping from a base type, and come through to CSL as plain "author"? I think that would be fine, if a bunch of people do come forward and say that it has to be in there.

Actually, it looks like 'author' doesn't actually exist on 'case', only 'counsel', which (I believe) comes across currently as 'author'. But yes, something (either 'judge' or 'counsel', depending on what you tell me) would be equivalent to 'author', and the rest wouldn't be mapped to CSL at all (unless such a mapping was added).

Hmm, there's something odd here. If you visit the following URL and click on the capture icon, you get an item with Author as "Blackmun":

http://www.law.cornell.edu/supct/html/historics/USSC_CR_0410_0113_ZO.html

Clicking + then adds another Author field, but as you say, straight Author is not featured in this type. The Author fields can then be changed to Counsel or Contributor, but they can't be changed back to Author because the type doesn't provide for that.

If Counsel is mapped to Author, and the translator has succeeded in shoehorning in an Author-author, I'm not sure what CSL will receive ... seems like the capture attempt should fail with an error when it tries to do this?

Dan,

Please go with plain vanilla "author" on the "case" type, passing it through to CSL as per normal. It's the right thing to do in a bunch of ways: no bloat in the UI, flexibly handles arbitrations etc. that have no judge, and keeps it clear what should go in the field. (It will also heal the issue with the existing translators described above within any further action, but that's just gravy.)

I've had one response off-list, from a head research librarian at a US law school, who agrees with the addition.

  • Resolution set to fixed
  • Status changed from new to closed

(In [5638]) Schema updates:

  • For "Book Section", added "Book Author" (needs to be mapped to CSL container-author) (closes #872)
  • For A/V item types, "Recording Type" mapped to "Type" is now "Format" mapped to "Medium" (closes #1060)
  • For "Radio Broadcast" and "TV Broadcast", replaced "Series Title" with "Program Title" mapped to "Publication Title" (CSL field container-title rather than collection-title) (closes #860)
  • For "Patent", added "Country" field, removed (nonfunctional) base-map from "Place" to "Country", added "Issuing Authority", replaced "Date" with "Filing Date" (not currently mapped to CSL), and moved "Date" data to "Filing Date". Kept "Issue Date" base-mapped to "Date". (closes #1375)
  • For "Film", mapped "Distributor" to "Publisher" (closes #861) and added "Genre" mapped to "Type"
  • For "Podcast", mapped "Audio File Type" to "Medium" rather than "Type"
  • For "Bill", added "Cosponsor" creator type (closes #655)
  • For "Case", added "Author" as primary creator type instead of "Counsel" (#655)

This can't yet sync, so upping sync API version and delaying dev XPI build.
