Vancouver and Chicago Manual of Style are probably the two most important unfinished styles at this point. Chicago needs to be redone in the new schema. Simon, how far did you get with CMS?

I think all styles are now upgraded to the new schema except for ASA.

comment:7 Changed 9 years ago by stakats

There is still one Chicago note style outstanding. One generates a reference list/bibliography at the end and hence includes only short citations in footnotes. The other Chicago note does not include a bibliography and therefore includes full citations for the first reference to each item.

I used the formats described here as the basis, they don't seem to mention that style unless I'm missing something.

The -note form I did allows a bibliography.

See section 16.3: http://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org/ch16/ch16_sec003.html

Bibliographic entry:

Doniger, Wendy. Splitting the Difference: Gender and Myth in Ancient Greece and India. Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 1999.

First note citation in a work with full bibliography:

1. Doniger, Splitting the Difference, 23.

First note citation in a work without full bibliography:

1. Wendy Doniger, Splitting the Difference: Gender and Myth in Ancient Greece and India (Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 1999), 23.

Ahh - its in the subscription only section, that's why I can't see it. I don't have the book either.

comment:11 Changed 9 years ago by stakats

The two different Chicago styles are fairly straightforward:

If there is to be a bibliography included, first citations will include the following info:

Author Last Name; Short Title; Locator

If there is to be no bibliography included, first citations to reference an item will include:

Author Full Name; Full Title; Full Publication Info; Locator

Ibid rules and abbreviated subsequent citation rules should be identical in both styles.

Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong here.

The CMoS website will let you create a free 30-day trial account, and doesn't require much personal information.

FYI: Chicago only "recommends" that the first citation is shortened if bibliography is included. Many universities still require full first citations as well as bibliography for dissertations.

"If the bibliography includes all works cited in the notes, the note citations—even the first citation to a particular work—can be quite concise, since readers can turn to the bibliography for publication details and other information. Chicago recommends this practice as user-friendly and economical—duplication of information is minimized."

I hate to sound as a broken record, but these styles are not complete until they can also cite letters, manuscripts, interviews, and presentations correctly.

https://www.zotero.org/trac/ticket/678

CSL schema does include such cs-types as "interview," "manuscript," and "personal_communication". At the same time it looks like the schema doesn't define "recipient," "interviewer," "location in archive," and "repository"--all variables necessary to cite these types correctly. ("Type" for manuscripts and letters and "Medium" for interviews are also necessary in some cases).

I think this ticket has served its time now, all these styles are now in the new SVN repository (and more).

Note: See TracTickets for help on using tickets.
