#287 closed enhancement (fixed)

"et al." handling in Creator column needs refinement

Reported by: stakats Owned by: dstillman
Priority: major Milestone: 1.0.0
Component: interface Version: 1.0

Description

"et al." should only appear when there are three or more authors. When there are two authors, both last names should appear in alphabetical order: Adams and Baker. With non-Romanized languages, I don't know how we go about ordering names.

Right now our bibliographic export is getting smart enough to differentiate among editors, translators, and authors, but our "Creator" column is still lumping everyone together as "et al." Take this example:

Kaplan, Steven Laurence. "Social Classification and Representation in the Corporate World of Eighteenth-Century France: Turgot's "Carnival"." In Work in France: Representations, Meaning, Organization, and Practice, edited by Steven Laurence Kaplan and Cynthia J. Koepp. Ithaca: Cornell University Press, 1986.

Our "Book Section" would have three creators: Kaplan as author, Kaplan again as editor, and Koepp as editor. However in a user's collection pane, only "Kaplan" (in his role as author of course) should show up as as Creator.

Rather than alphabetical sorting when there are exactly two creators, I think that they should be listed in order of appearance. This solves the ambiguity for non-Romanized languages. It is also more "expected" (as it is the most usual form for bibliographic output & the first creator listed would be the same as if the reference had three or more creators (and the second creator would be replaced by an "et al.").

when you fix this, please don't forget to exclude letter recipient and interviewer from the middle pane--only letter authors (for letters) or interviewees (for interviews) should be listed.
