this is really a Firefox bug that I can't really do much about

Well, there is one option -- popping up a modal window like the Create Bibliography window and having the user choose the export format there, and then popping up a Save dialog with the appropriate extension (and no others in the drop-down). A little annoying having two steps, but possibly less annoying than the current behavior. And there may be other export options later on anyway that would necessitate the extra step.

yeah, i guess we already have a second dialog when you're doing Scholar RDF export, so I may as well try that approach. thanks for the idea.
