Sebastian suggests and I agree that this is just a migration artifact, so I'm writing it off as essentially an NYT bug.

I suspect this is a rare and older layout. Marking as minor, and probably won't fix this unless we identify a significant subset of pages that exhibit the behavior. These pages are missing the metadata that we usually use for NYT.
