I develop and appliy different systems approaches in my research on socio-technical systems' impacts on the environmental. I'm particularly interested in studies related to risks in many forms. I also deal with energy systems based on renewable sources in terms of prerequisites and consequences of their implementation in rural Africa, both regarding technical, societal and environmental aspects. Current research also include interdisciplinary collaboration with social scientists regarding various types of environmentally related assessments. The identification and development of indicators and indicator systems to represent different important aspects of the socio-technical systems forms a basis for the different methodological approaches. I'm also head of the Division of Environmental Systems Analysis, Energy and Environment, and member of the United Nations Environmental Program's Scientific Expert Group on Chemicals and the Environment.
