Steve Holt trained in London, UK and during this time he was a Medical Research Council training fellow, completing a PhD examining oxidant injury in rhabdomyolysis and the hepatorenal syndrome. He then became Consultant Nephrologist & Hon. Senior Lecturer Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals, UK. Later be also became director of the Clinical Investigation and Research Unit there.

He moved to Australia in 2010 as Nephrologist and Adjunct Professor of Nephrology at Eastern Health and EH Clinical School, Monash, Melbourne.
Major research interests include cardiovascular pathology in renal disease and home dialysis therapies.  He co-authored the UK guidelines on cardiovascular disease in CKD and has in excess of 80 peer reviewed publications
