Matthew Spady

Audubon Park's self-designated, armchair historian, perennially researching and writing the history of a wooded vale just north of 155th Street that John James Audubon purchased in 1841, establishing a farm and living there the late decade of his life, a farm that successive owners fashioned into a rural enclave of spacious villas beneath ancient forest trees, a rural enclave just beyond the reach of the city until the subway and Riverside Drive brought the metropolis to its doorstep, a metropolis that devoured the rural Arcadia, replacing it with the group of magnificent Beaux Arts apartment buildings that stand in Audubon Park today.
