Research in Progress

"Diagnosis and Prescription Remediation Study" (On-Going)

Students taking LS098 Basic Algebra Skills during Spring 2013 and Fall 2013 were pre- and post-tested on their multiplication/division and their fraction operation performance, using Morningside Academy (Seattle, WA) Diagnosis and Prescription assessments.  The classroom treatment included rate-building of vocabulary and single-digit multiply/divide math facts, flipping the classroom using NROC video lectures, and in-class practice problems aligned with the lectures.  Final grades in LS098 and subsequent grades in MS100 will be compared to historical trends.

"Fraction-Final Correlation Study" (with Dr. Jan Case, MCIS, JSU; on-going)

The fraction items missed by LS098 Basic Algebra Skills students during the previous five years have been tallied and will be compared to their final grades in LS098 and MS100 Intermediate Algebra SKills to see if fraction performance and algebra performance are correlated.

"Math Facts Maintenance Study" (with Ms. Anna Marie Schaefer, Texas Technology University; on-going)

Seven students in the Learning Services 2012 ExSEL program participated in rate-building exercises on single-digit multiplication and division facts for six weeks.  Their rate of correct answers was retested after one month of no practice to measure retention.  The study was replicated in 2013.
