Director of DAAM, department of the Ministry of the Environment (MMA) responsible for coordinating the Rain Forest Pilot Program, being the MMA focal point for the Sustainable Amazon Plan, and development of the Amazon Program proposal, a three-billion dollars program for sustainable development and conservation in the Amazon being negotiated in the government and with the international donor community.
2003-2007 Amazon Region Protected Areas (ARPA) Program, Ministry of the Environment, Brasília, DF, Brazil.
Coordinator of the ARPA Program, a ten-year endeavor coordinated by the Ministry of the Environment, and implemented in partnership with WWF, GEF, the World Bank, KfW and Funbio (Brazilian Biodiversity Fund), aimed at the creation and establishment of 37.5 million hectares of new protected areas (PAs) and consolidation of existing 12.5 million hectares of PAs in the Brazilian Amazon, and the creation of an endowment fund of US$ 240 million to ensure long term financial sustainability for these protected areas.

Trained local extension personnel and rubber tapper leaders in participatory methods to work with communities, promoted events, carried out participatory community appraisal and planning, and created instructional materials.
Two of the main achievements were the creation and implementation of the first two extractive reserve development plans in Brazil and the development of a methodological approach to create and implement such plans with local participation.

Coordinated the Project “Studies of Tropical Tree Species: Subsidies to the Implementation of Agroforestry Systems in Acre, Brazil", funded by the Ford Foundation: research on 138 tree species, extension agroforestry systems, graduate and undergraduate training in forest ecology and management.
Taught Basic Ecology and Amazon Ecology to undergraduate students.
Trained rubber tappers and colonists in agroforestry and taught a basic science course to 30 Indian teachers from eight different tribes.
Gave assistance in Environmental Education to the Environmental Secretariat of the Rio Branco Municipality (Acre's capital)
