Dr Ross Mahoney

I am an independent scholar specialising in the history of war with reference to air power and the history of air warfare. I am currently the Senior Historian at Brisbane City Council in Australia. I have over 15 years of experience within the education, museum and heritage sectors in Australia and the United Kingdom. I am also the editor-in-chief and owner of From Balloons to Drones, an online scholarly platform that seeks to provide analysis and debate about air power history, theory, and contemporary operations in their broadest sense, including space and cyber power. Between 2013 and 2017, I was the inaugural Historian at the Royal Air Force Museum in the UK. Since relocating to Australia, I have worked as a Historian for the Department of Veterans’ Affairs and as a Teaching Fellow at the Strategic and Defence Studies Centre at The Australian National University based at the Australian War College. My research interests focus on the history of war, with a specific focus on the history of air warfare and professional military education. I also have broader interests in transport history and urban history. I am currently working on several research projects, including examining the experience, evolution and development of the Royal Australian Air Force during the era of the Vietnam War. To date, I have published several chapters and articles, edited two books, and delivered papers on three continents to various civilian and military audiences.
