There have been several high profile car accidents involving Uber drivers in period 1. Period 1 is when the Uber app is turned on and the motorist is waiting to except a fare. It became clear that Uber drivers did not have any type of personal Uber Car Insurance that would carry into period 1. The Uber drivers had not been going to be paid for by their private insurance company and needed to learn the hard way that their totaled car. The California legislature stepped in to define what Uber Car Insurance (rideshare) was and made the conclusion that private insurance without a rideshare endorsement wouldn't cover the Uber driver.
