Michael Rathbun Syracuse
Michael Rathbun was born and raised in Syracuse New York and attended St John Fisher College in Rochester NY where he received a B.A in English and Political Science. Following college, Michael Rathbun worked as a child counselor in the early 1980’s at both Elmcrest Children Center and Hillbrook Detention Facility. After working as a child counselor, Michael Rathbun joined the Syracuse Police Department in 1985. As president of his academy class, Michael Rathbun presented a graduation speech on the ‘nobility of policing’. Michael Rathbun worked in patrol for several years and then transferred to a plainclothes investigator position. Michael Rathbun then stayed in the Criminal Investigation Division until he was promoted to Sergeant in 1990. Michael Rathbun worked in the Criminal Investigation Division and Patrol Bureau as a Sergeant until he was promoted Lieutenant several years later. As a Lieutenant, Michael Rathbun worked in Patrol and also commanded the Community Relations Division which consisted of recruiting the School Resource officers (the detectives assigned to the city’s schools), Youth Division, Missing Persons, and Crime Prevention. Later Michael Rathbun commanded the Syracuse Police contingency within the Onondaga County Crime Lab where he supervised forensics and call-outs to major crime scenes. Michael Rathbun was promoted to Captain in 2001 where he remained until he retired in 2006.
