Michael Neely, MD

Michael Neely, MD
Assistant Professor of Pediatrics
Department of Pediatrics, Division of Infectious Diseases
Laboratory of Applied Pharmacokinetics

Dr. Neely is board certified in pediatric infectious diseases and board-eligible in clinical pharmacology.  His research and clinical interests are in the optimization of drug therapy for infectious diseases, particularly fungal infections and HIV.  Working with multidisciplinary faculty collaborators, he is conducting an on-going NIH-funded study to study the simultaneous blood and genital pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of antiretroviral therapy in women.  He also has NIH funding to use random drug levels as a means to monitor adherence in HIV-infected children, adolescents and adults.  With expertise in computerized drug-response modeling, he is applying his research interests to the care of his patients by operating the first HIV therapeutic drug management service at LAC+USC, which is available to all HIV providers.  Dr. Neely is active in CDC Legacy project to gather longitudinal data from a large nationwide cohort of HIV-infected children.  He serves on the project’s Primary Therapy Scientific Committee.  He is also active in the NIAID-NICHD International Maternal Pediatric Adolescent Center Trials (IMPAACT) Group, and is a member of the Infectious Diseases Society of America, the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society, and the American College of Clinical Pharmacology.  He is the author of numerous articles and abstracts and has several collaborators worldwide for whom he provides population pharmacokinetic modeling and clinical trial design expertise. He is currently enrolled in a Master’s of Science program in Clinical and Biomedical Investigations at USC, with a focus on applied Bayesian approaches to clinical trial design and pharmacokinetic modeling.
