Within the field of twentieth-century European history, Charles Maier's article "Consigning the Twentieth Century to History: Alternative Narratives for the Modern Era" (2000) examines the concept of territoriality as a framework for analysis. Though Maier was primarily focused on issues with the periodization of the twentieth century, his ideas of territoriality can also help us rethink spatial boundaries when studying globalization, imperialism, diplomatic power, ect. Mary Dewhurst Lewis's article "Geographies of Power: The Tunisian Civic Order, Jurisdictional Politics, and Imperial Rivalry in the Mediterranean, 1881–1935" is an example of how this notion can be put to use.
