CALL FOR ABSTRACTS, Emotions Network, ESA
For the upcoming 10th congress of the European Sociological Association which is to take place in Geneva, Switzerland between the 7th and 10th of September, 2011 the Emotions Network (Nr. 11) would like to receive abstracts in the general area of the sociology of emotions. Abstracts in theory are especially welcome. Please note that a special session on the role of emotions will be organized together with the network on social movements and collective behaviour. Abstracts are to be sent to the ESA-e-mail which will be provided by the ESA-program committee soon. Abstract submission will be open on Monday, 10th January 2011 and will be closed on Sunday, 25th February 2011. The following 7 topics are also strongly encouraged:
Emotions & Integration & (Imagined)Communities: In the past few decades a renewed interest in the impact and role of emotions in linking micro- and macro levels has evolved in the social sciences. It reveals the crucial importance of emotions for the processes and actions fostering a sense of “belonging”, and leading to, shaping and sustaining various types of social collectives, including nations. The panel invites original contributions with a focus on these issues.
Social Movements & New & More Complex Emotions: This session will be devoted to theorizing and analyzing social movements whose emotions or emotional repertoire complex and goes beyond the "shame, pride and anger"-set. Contrasts between the emotion(s) attached to the self-image and the emotion(s) attached to the public image of a movement are also of interest.
Emotions & the Media: In the context of the global financial crisis the mass media play a pivotal role in framing issues and emotions emanating from “the crash”. While for some the crisis is overshadowed by rhetoric of fear, panic, anger and guilt, for others the current socio-political landscape signals an opportunity for hope and regeneration. This session will explore whether there are uniquely national, cultural or even pan-European styles of affectively documenting the present situation.
Emotions & Internet: This session will address emotions expressed via internet (CMC) at three levels of social organization: the micro level of the individual and dyadic relations; the mezzo level of groups, organizations, social movement and community; and at the macro level of society and transnational networks.
Methods: In preparation for a planned book on methods and emotions, this session calls for advanced contributions on methods fit or especially developed to unearth and analyze emotions. Emotions emerging during research are also of interest.
Body and Emotions in Action: The body is a medium for expression of emotions. Expressed emotions are part and parcel of experience, interaction and the stories actors told afterwards. There are many strategies to control or exploit emotions in body action in order to influence the definition of the situation and steer (inter)action. Even in protest the control of expressive behaviour is an extremely important resource. This session will address the body and emotions in (protest) action.
Immigration, Inegration and Emotions: In the past years Europe has fortified itself against immigration. Some countries even manage to convert themselves into countries of emigration. Yet immigration as such but also “integration of” migrants and their (grand)children remains an object of heated, emotionalized controversies. This session invites abstracts on these topics.
