Although most films of the late 19th century were reenactments, there were many soilders that would go to the films because they enjoyed seeing themselves on screen. Dispite the fact that the films never seemed to give the Spanish-American war the noteriety it deserved, I do find it interesting that the projection machines that were used to make these films inherited the nickname "warograph" and "warscope". Another thing that I read that was interesting is the fact that when these films were made, the camera was shot from an angle that reflected the US soilders as they related to the audience.
There seems to be no real attention given to the Spanish-American was as compared to all other wars. The authur of this article seemed to feel as though the only benifit that arose from this war was that it "placed the foundation blocks" for the motion picture industry. It was the "thematic and chronological coherence" of these war films that opened the door to story film.
