I found this using the link Dr. B provided to the U.S. Dept. Of Ed. I wanted to draw attention to the section around page 30-44. This was very difficult for me to digest as I read. In this section it refers to multiple experiments that attempt to show a difference in progress for students who participate in Face to Face vs. Online instruction. Some found a significant difference in favor of face to face, but others contradicted the findings. I think a major disadvantage to research n education is the amount of variables that are present, such as instructors, learning styles, curriculums chosen, and particular tasks assigned. However, I feel that this text acknowledges some of the issues with the experiments chosen. Many of the assessments chosen to measure for change involved multiple choice. However, some of the experiments utilized rubrics to determine success of programs. One such experiment was with special education classrooms using a web based writing practice tool for instruction. The outcome produced an increase in their ability to write over the traditional instructional style. I found this to be interesting, but, like I stated before, hard to digest, or even summarize. There is a lot of information and statistics. I think this is going to be a great research support because 1. It is backed by the Dept. Of Ed. and 2. It does utilize a number of experiments that include a variety of learners, topics, and environmental settings. Worth a look. Hope I highlighted a helpful section.
