MeLa Project

MeLa
Museums and Libraries in/of the Age of Migrations

MeLa is a four year long research project funded by the European Commission under the Socio-economic Sciences and Humanities programme (Seventh Framework Programme). The Project moves from the European call Reinterpreting Europe’s cultural heritage: towards 21st century libraries and museums? and aims to define new strategies for museums and libraries in a context characterized by a continuous migration of people and ideas.
MeLa reflects on the role of museums and libraries with an interdisciplinary approach, facing with several complex and crucial issues as history, socio-cultural and national identity, the use of new technologies and, last but not least, exhibition design and museography. The Project therefore involves 9 European partners, including different universities, two Museums, a research institute and a small enterprise, chosen for their specific competences and skills in the fields of the research. The main objective of MeLa is to achieve a relevant knowledge advancement; to reach its goal the MeLa Project will exploit and develop different research actions and tools including both innovative ones – as ‘Think Tank’ modules and ‘Research by Art’ – and traditional ones – as Desk Research and Call for Papers.
At the end of the research project some Guide Lines will be developed, tested by a Design Application, and collected in a Guide Lines Handbook conceived to support the museums and libraries community, practitioners, experts and policymakers in developing mission and forms of Museums and Libraries in the “age of migrations”.
