Kane Anderson
An emerging scholar-practitioner and fan-scholar in his second year of PhD study, Kane Anderson received his MFA in Theatre Performance from Arizona State University and completed his BA in Theatre at the University of Pennsylvania. Mr. Anderson's primary research focus examines the utility and cultural capital of superheroes through a combination of Performance Studies, Media Studies, Comics Studies and Fan Studies. In addition to conducting ongoing ethnographic research at Comic-Con and presentations at the Comics Arts Conferece, Mr. Anderson investigates comic books as performance while also interrogating how "performing the super" operates as a distinctly American transmedia phenomenon.
He has presented at the Consortium for Literature, Theory, and Culture: Collaborative Humanities at UC Santa Barbara and will present his paper "Super-Obama vs. Barack the Barbarian: the Perils and Performances of a Comic Book Politician" at this year's Mid-Atlantic Popular/American Culture Association Conference. Mr. Anderson served as part of the Graduate Student Caucus with the American Society for Theatre Research and currently represents the interests of PhD students on several department committees.
He teaches THTR 5: Introduction to Acting this Fall and has taught acting classes at ASU, UCSB and in private workshops in addition to guest-lecturing on superheroes and comic studies.
Mr. Anderson has been acting professionally for over a decade and continues to bring his work and training to Santa Barbara area stages. He has studied at the London Academy of Theatre and the Moscow Art Theatre School. His theatre interests include actor training, Russian theatre, devising projects and new work development. At UCSB, he has appeared in RECKLESS and directed the play SEX LIVES OF SUPERHEROES for UCSB'S Graduate-Directed One-Acts. He is also an accomplished dramaturg. M
