My research as an anthropologist has primarily been on ritual, politics, art and popular aesthetics in central and southern Africa and in African American communities in the American South.  These days I'm especially interested in popular memories of slavery and Jim Crow, including lynching and racial violence, especially as embedded in landscape features and art forms.
