Graduate Student at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Currently pursuing MA in United States History. Primary field is Early American history. Research interest at the moment focuses on the exchanges of medicinal, ritual, and recreational substances during the Columbian exchange. Origins and evolution of "drugs" and "narcotics". These two terms seem, on the surface, to represent a finite class of substances. However, this is not so. The terms have no universally accepted scientific or social definitions. Historically, these terms have evovled to encompass a certain set of unrelated substances. My research focuses on the early origins of these concepts and their evolution during the Early American period.
