Lisa Brown

I am a postdoctoral researhcer at the Center for Nanoscale Science and Technology (CNST), a division of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in Gaithersburg, Maryland, USA.

My work focuses on developing instrumentation and research methods for a new technique called Photothermal Induced Resonance (PTIR) spectroscopy. In this method, an atomic force microscope (AFM) scans over a sample area that is simultaneously illuminated with an infared laser. Vibrational signatures are detected based on deflections in the AFM cantilever. One of the novelties of this method is that it does not require an infrared detector or an interferometer, yet it is capable of generating 2D maps of infrared spectroscopic signals with ~20 nm resolution.
