Lee Parpart
I am a former arts journalist now working on a PhD in Social & Political Thought at York University in Toronto, with a dissertation that explores selected examples of women's screen adaptations of women's fiction in English-Canada (1994 to 2015). With a focus on six case studies (Kissed, The Atwood Stories, The Shields Stories, Stay, Sitting on the Edge of Marlene and the forthcoming Brown Girl in the Ring: The Prequel), I explore various aspects of the adaptation process related to gender, race and social, political, economic and industrial contexts of production and reception. With a focus on the way adaptations figure within the gendered work of surviving uneven conditions of austerity, this research explores women's adaptations of women's fiction in relation to shifting discourses of neoliberalism and postfeminism in an 'expanded' English-Canadian context that takes into account links to transnational feminist cinema. My research combines ethnography, industrial approaches to adaptation, production studies, and gender studies, while also responding directly to Kamilla Elliott's 2014 call for a better integration of textual and contextual approaches within scholarly work on adaptation.
