Stavros LAZARIS

I am a researcher at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) and Professor of Byzantine History at the Catholic University of Paris.

My research and teaching concern the history of Byzantine science, including the study of original textual and visual documents related to the field.

Since my doctoral thesis, I have worked on medieval illustrations and their place in the transmission of medical and scientific knowledge to Byzantium. Horses and their role in the army and the economy of Late Antiquity and Byzantium is another major theme of my research, especially through the study of equine science technology (horseshoes, stirrup...) and the history of veterinary medicine. I have also written on Visual Studies and, since my habilitation, I am interested in the Christianization of pagan scientific literature.
