I'm on the faculty of The New School where I teach courses in history, urban studies, and the arts. My current research examines the intersection of urbanization and the arts. One book, Culture Cities, will explore the rise of cosmopolitanism and arts institutions amidst urban development in the 20th century; another will look at how the musical and film West Side Story reveal the intertwining of immigration, gender relations, aesthetics, and urban renewal in mid-century New York.
