Jan Thiele received his Dr. phil. (2012) from Freie Universität Berlin. After serving as Senior Research Associate in an ERC Advanced Grant project at the same university, he held a research fellowship at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London (2013–2014). He is a two-time recipient of Marie Curie research grants, the first awarded by the Gerda Henkel foundation in the EU co-funded M4HUMAN program (2013–2015) and the second being an Intra European Fellowship funded within the 7th European Community Framework Programme (2015–2017). He was awarded the Research prize 2013 of the Annemarie-Schimmel-Stiftung für Islamkunde and received grants funded by the Marie Curie Alumni Association (2014), the DFG (2008–2011; 2013–2014, declined) and the DAAD (2008).
