One strand of this conversation began as a panel propsal for the 2010 World History Association annual meeting: what is the role of narrative in World History? At the panel, Terry Burke suggested that everyone present should write down books they had found compelling or transformative as readers of history. Tonio Andrade compiled the list from people's scraps of paper. We hope readers will comment on the books that started the list and make contributions of their own.
