Researchathon - A Theater of the Americas - Dramatic Creation and Historical Imagination
Researchathon for Nicole T. Hughes

Nicole T. Hughes’s dissertation argues that a trans-regional "Theater of the Americas" was invented in the sixteenth century through a crucial tension between dramatic creation and historical imagination. As if in concert, diverse players (conquistadors, mendicant friars, indigenous elites, Jesuits, and governing bodies) reopened and recast history in theatrical works in order to advance the creation of new societies. Scholarship inserts these works into national literary traditions, but historical connections justify grouping them into an American corpus.
