Improving Urban Ger Settlements in Ulaabaatar, Mongolia

In the last decade, some 600.000 migrants coming from the country have settled in the periphery of Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia. The migrants are former nomads with a pastoral culture who move to the city looking for better opportunities and need to adapt to a new life in a completely different environment. Many newly settled families still live in Yurts, the traditional Mongolian nomadic felt tents. The resulting informal settlements, known as Ger Settlements, amount to a 65% of the population of Ulaanbaatar, and pose a major challenge for the urban and social development of the capital.
