The student-researchers in this course will try something a little different to kick off the semester following a lesson plan from my mentor Michael Wesch at KSU. Instead of the standard syllabus that requires everybody to read a few articles or books to discuss, we will organize ourselves into a Smart Mob that would try to read a good chunk of the literature on the history of women and gender in hip-hop in one go. The instructor chose to have students explore the implications of gender identity and expression in the history and culture, which is the centerpiece of the syllabus this term.
Each student is required to find 5 articles, read them, and summarize them; uploading their summaries (and the author’s own abstract) into Zotero. Zotero is a free service that allows you to create collaborative or group bibliographies.
