For over 2,400 years the definition of a liberal arts education has been an evolving and often contentious debate. This course will apply a historical and normative approach toward the study of the origin and evolution of the liberal arts tradition. Drawing on themes of responsibilities and principles imparted by the study of the humanities, we will explore how the study and scholarship of the liberal arts develops a more socially aware and engaged citizen. You will critically evaluate the liberal arts system in regard to preparing graduates for lives of service and fulfillment in their communities and the world.
