Rental car insurance in Playa del Carmen

PLI (Personal Liability Insurance): this is 100% mandatory, not just for rental cars, but for all drivers in Mexico. This covers property damage and injuries to third parties up to a certain limit (check the rental agreement for details).

SLI (Supplemental Liability Insurance): this is optional coverage that increases the coverage limits of PLI. If the PLI seems to be too low to cover a moderate car accident, and you like to play it safe, you might feel better having SLI too.

CDW or LDW (Collision/Loss Damage Waiver): not technically insurance, but protects you from having to pay for the cost of damage to the rental car. This isn’t required, but most credit card companies offer it for free with no deductible. You can also buy it from the rental car agency, which will usually include a 10-20% deductible. If you don’t have any CDW coverage and the car is damaged or stolen, you’ll be on the hook for the repair/replacement costs.
