Eric O'Brien
I recently earned my Ph.D in English from the University of California, Davis. My dissertation, Inexpressible: The Romantic Origins of Agrarian Rhetoric, examines the effects of the first English Board of Agriculture on the work of Wordsworth, Coleridge, and Southey. I argue that much of the figurative and rhetorical content of the contemporary “locavore” and “organic” food movements originates in the ideological production of Romanticism. In other words, the ways in which we talk about growing food locally and organically is strongly influenced by Romanticism.
