I am a graduate student at San Francisco State University currently working on my thesis.  I am researching the history of Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter in American high schools--when it was first incorporated into curriculum, why and how it was taught, and how the reasons for teaching it have changed over the course of twentieth century.  I am also looking at how it is currently being taught in high school English classrooms today.  Bottom line is:  Is The Scarlet Letter still worthy of study in high school classrooms in 2011?
