Emanuel Kulczycki

My research interests focuses on two fields. The first one is philosophy of communication and the other is scholarly communication as well as research evaluation (scientometrics).

When working within the philosophical perspective, I attempt to investigate how we understand the key social practice – communication. Communication has become a phenomenon through which we realize our goals (e.g., we communicate and negotiate meanings). At the same time, communication is a tool which makes it possible to understand all human activity.

I try to combine two different perspectives on the humanities: philosophy of communication and communication theory. In my opinion, philosophy provides the best point of departure for studying human behaviour and actions. However, every communication theorist should begin with establishing some epistemological foundations of their research. And this is what I attempt to do.

My investigations on research evaluation focuses on the transformation of scholarly communication practices which result from changes in the means and forms of communication as well as changes in the collective representations of communication practices. I am interested in the methods of parametric evaluation of publications in the social sciences and the humanities.

Moreover, I’m an active blogger. I blog about scholarly communication and academic publishing. I strongly support Open Science and Open Access. I investigate the academic blogosphere (especially in Poland) and I try to popularize the social media in research and knowledge
dissemination.
